Technical Article by Physicist, Dr. Peter Vine, Concludes Aluminium Smelter Complex Air Quality Modelling is "Erroneous"

ABSTRACT. Air dispersion modelling (ADM) was required by the Environmental Management Authority (EMA) of Trinidad and Tobago for an aluminium smelter complex, an iron and steel plant and a chlor-alkali plant.

This article critiques the outputs of the modelling. For the aluminium smelter complex, wind roses which were produced by the MM5 model, and then used in the CALPUFF ADM, underestimated calm periods 20-fold compared with actual observations.

For the iron and steel plant and for the chlor-alkali plant, the ADMs (ISC3 and AERMOD) produced apparently unjustifiable bicycle spoke patterns instead of concentric loops of iso-concentration around the source. It is concluded that the predictions of airborne emission concentrations were erroneous and that the Certificates of Environmental Clearance (CECs) for the plants must be withdrawn.

  1. I wonder what actions the supine EMA will be taking to protect T&T citizens in La Brea and further a field form airborne and water borne carcinogens? Not a lot I suppose. Many public servants will not take a stand against PNM hegemony that is destroying the country. The Opposition is too venal to unite and fight a good fight. The only recourse now is civil action by concerned citizens. All praise to the Truth Drummers.

  2. I don't think the EMA will do anything to seek the interest of the environment or the people living in and around the proposed smelter in La Brea. My opinion for the longest while has been that the EMA has double standards. By that i mean that they crack down on the improper disposal of waste from a chicken farm or people playing loud music at parties and fetes which are without a doubt illegal, BUT they gave the OK for the construction of a smelter! Was the details of the feasibility study of building such a plant ever made public? It tends to make you think that the EMA is not there for the interest of the environment or safety of human health in Trinidad and Tobago but as scapegoat for the PNM to get "environmental clearance" to do whatever they want.---kdd
